DEPRESSION OF ARJUNA – BHAGWAD GITA:Chapter 1

June 2, 2019 by admin Leave a Comment

Depression is a mental health condition, a state of mind which happens when negativity in thoughts comes. At this moment one feels very  low in mood & finds incapable of making self decision & becomes idle. He feels weakness not only physically but also emotionally & stops taking interest in any activity. Exactly this happened with Arjuna too at Kurukshetra before start of battle.

REASON BEHIND BATTLE :

When Duryodhana didn’t agree to give back  pandavas even as much land as is covered by the tip of a pointed needle even after the advice of Shree Krisna. The war was enevitable.  There was no alternative but fight.

MAHABHARAT (SCENE AT BATTLE FIELD) :

The army of Pandvas & Kaurvas stood facing each other on the battle field of Kurukshetra.  Bheeshma was the commander of Kaurava army. He blew his conch. This was a call to his warriors to ready themselves for the battle. Both sides (Kaurvas & Pandavas) blew their conch shells, trumpets. These are blown to create fear among enemy before the start of war. Shri Krishna blew his Panchajanya conch shell & Arjuna blew his Devdutta. The air was rent with the sound of the blowing of conches, the beating of drums, the clank of weapons, the trumpeting of elephants and the neighing of horses.

ARJUNA : SKILLED WARRIOR

Then, Arjuna with great confidence turned to Lord Krishna & desired to have a look at the warriors aligned for battle & with whom he was going to fight. He asked Shri Krishna to take chariot to the middle of both army. Then Shri Krishna led the chariot  in the middle of battle field & told him to see the enemies carefully .

ARJUNA’S DILEMMA :

In every one’s life  it happens when one finds it difficult to take a right decision. In the mid of the battle field, Arjun saw his Grand father, uncles, Brothers, Sons, Nephews, Friends & Teachers. Who were ready there to fight. Arjuna, who came in the battle field mentally prepared to avenge the wrongs that had been done to him & his brothers by his cousins, became confused . When Arjuna saw his relatives assembled against him, brave man who had come prepared in battle field with jubilation suddenly became emotional.

EMOTIONAL ARJUN :

Though Arjuna was a brave man &  very skilled warrior, he was gentle & saint by nature too. There was two options before him either to fight or to abstain from fighting. As being kind hearten & Krishna devotee, seeing His fellow Kurus as enemy his heart became soft &  loosed his determination to fight with them.

WHAT MADE ARJUNA SO THOUGHTFUL

Arjuna confessed Shri Krishna that he was not interested in getting a kingdom after slaying his own kith & kins . He said that there was no regal dignity without his own people. The battle would lead to destruction of dynasty which further demolishes family traditions. In such circumstances women in family goes to decadence. Due to which unwanted generation starts grooming that has no ethical values.

Arjuna said that he heard from his teachers that those, who involve in sinful practices & destroys the family ethics, goes to hell . He found this  very surprising that people in opposition  were not looking any wrong in killing of their own people.

REPERCUSSIONS OF THOUGHT  :

However, Arjuna said that he could see this malefaction & would not involve himself in such sinful deeds. Also, he could not slay his own kinsmen not even for all three worlds, much less a kingdom. Arjuna started feeling shake with dry mouth, found it difficult to stand & his grip on the bow loosened.

He told Lord Krishna that he would not fight.

In next chapters we will try to understand what Lord Krishna advised Arjuna about life & duty. How Krishna teaches Arjuna not to see the things from his own particular point of view, but from the point of view of Time in which he is living.

February 17, 2019 by admin Leave a Comment

 LIFE :

What is meaning of  life ? This has always remained a puzzle in one’s mind even today. Nobody knows that from where life comes & where it goes. Why it is ?  What is life ? how to live life & how to take it? There are many answers about life given by philosophers like Life is struggle, Life is love song, Life is Action & Life is a village where happiness & sorrow resides. However, what is the true meaning of life & What causes happiness  & sorrow in Life, Shrimad Bhagwad Gita has detailed answer.

BHAGWAD GITA :

Bhagwad Gita is a conversation between God & Man. The most religious & scholastic conversation in human history happened just before start of Kurukshetra war between hundred sons of Dhritrastra &  their cousins Pandavas. Lord Krishna explained meaning of life to his loyal friend Arjuna about 5000 years ago.  This is a “Song of God”,  wherein Almighty said that one must know his duty, then act on it with devotion without having any hunger for its fruits.

Life is a journey of good or bad experiences.  Bhagwad Gita gives positivity to our thoughts & shows way to its purpose at the time when we are indecisive. Bhagwad Gita In today’s life,  is appealing people’s attention. This illustrate the meaning of life.

The word Gita means song, Bhagwad means God & Shrimad is an adjective used to pay respect. Gita consists of 18 chapters & 700 shloka (verses). Bhagwad Gita is originally excerpted from an event of Sanskrit epic Mahakavya “Mahabharat”.  Mahabharat is attributed to Veda Vyas. This is a story of struggle between two groups of cousins (Kauravas & Pandavas) in Kurukshetra War.

MAHABHARAT :
Dhritrashtra & Pandu were real brothers born in Kuru dynesty.  They were descendant of King Bharat.  Dhritrashtra married to Gandhari & had one hundred sons who became Kaurava. Pandu with his two wifes, Kunti & Madri,  had five sons. Their names were Yudhishthira, Bhima, Arjuna, Nakula & Sahadeva. They were known as Pandava . Draupdi was pandava’s wife.

Dhritrashtra was elder, as he was blind by birth, Therefore, Pandu became King. However Pandu died at very early age, due to which Dhritrastra became the King. Thus sons of Dhritrastra & Pandu grown up in one palace. They got militaristic training from Guru Drona.  Bhishma Pitamah, patron of Hastinapur, counseled them.

Duryodhana was eldest son of Dhritrashtra. He was very jealous & hated Pandavas. Dhritrashtra, too wanted to make him as his successor. He used to advise & provoke him, as things went Duryodhan planned conspiracy to kill Pandavas. However, due to support of uncle Vidur & cousin Krishna, pandavas managed to survive their lives. Krishna was nephew of Kunti, who was wife of Pandu.

DICE GAME :

At last, Duryodhana planned with the help of his maternal uncle, Shakuni arranged a Dice Game. In this dice game Yudhisther lost all his wealth, Kingdom, brothers, himself & wife Draupadi into slavery. Overjoyed Kauravas insulted Pandavas & tried to disrobe Draupadi in front of entire court. It was Krishna who prevented Draupadi’s disrobe & amazingly made her dress endless.

After losing in dice game, Pandavas had to go in to 12 years exile & in 13th year, they were to live in hidden. If discovered in 13th year, they would have to exile for next 12 years.
After completing the period of their exile, Pandavas tried to get back throne with Krishna as their envoy & claimed their Indraprastha . Duryodhan did not agree & this led to start of battle MAHABHARAT.

SIGNIFICANCE OF GEETA:
When Arjuna saw his brothers, brother in laws, grandfather, uncles & teachers on battle field against whom he was to fight. He became confused & refused to fight the battle. He said to Krishna that he had no desire of an empire without their own people.

Krishna noticed his confusion & hesitation. He counselled him that he would do nothing wrong by taking part in war. As a Warrior it was his duty to fight against injustice & that inaction in life was impossible & that life was nothing without performing duty.

In Bhagwad Gita, Krishna described consciousness (Chetna/Atma) is eternal & invisible, neither one can touch it nor one can kill it. Its existence in this world is as per good or bad actions in current or previous states of existence & after completing the life cycle It disappears with cosmic consciousness & once again becomes ready as per their preordination to next life cycle.

COSMIC CONSCIOUSNESS :

Krishna said : “If the splendor of a thousand Suns was to blaze all at once (simultaneously) in the sky, that would be like the splendor of that Mighty Being (great soul).” (Bhagavad Gita 11:12)

Thus the consciousness existing in us & in the universe is same. once we find which uphold the cosmic consciousness, we will find which sustains in us and if we find which upholds our being, we will have found the consciousness that sustains & uphold the universe.

There is nothing permanent in this world. There are two things, one that forms matter, is nature (Prakriti) & the other is consciousness (Chetna) . The one who is capable of understanding this, focuses on duty & finds joy in work.

Bhagwad Geeta defines the meaning & purpose of life. There is a conversation between Arjuna & Krishna, a man & God, that depicts ethical complexities of today’s life faced by everyone of us. In our next writings, chapter wise we will try to understand meaning of life from this ultimate Amritvani…………..
